| The commercially available crop protection products are in fact formulations based on an active ingredient.
By means of adding solvents, emulsifiers, dispersants or wetting agents a stable dilution in water is made possible. This aqueous solution can then be readily applied using suitable spraying apparatus.
Depending on the application profile of the specific active ingredient it must be decided whether a solid or liquid formulation is most suitable. In addition to this, formulations usually contain additional components which may increase the activity or improve handling for the user. One example of this would be a defoamer.
The auxiliaries can be described by their application or effect.
| Application / Effect | Auxiliary Type |
| Emulsification | Emulsifier |
| Dispersing | Dispersing Agent |
| Wetting | Wetting Agent |
| Inhibition of Crystallisation | Crystallisation Inhibitor |
| Defoaming | Defoamer |
| Dissolving | Solvent |
| Biological Activity | Adjuvant |
