Clariant launches new special solvent for paints and coatings

Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether

03/18/2004
Clariant has completed its broad range of glycol diethers solvents, also known as "Glymes" with a new product: Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether (CAS 111109-77-4).

Dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether is an extremely versatile and environmentally friendly solvent. It is not listed as hazardous air pollutant (HAP) and has an excellent toxicological profile. NMP is listed under Proposition 65 as known to cause reproductive toxicity.

Dipropylene glycol DME can replace NMP (N-methyl pyrrolidone) in most applications and works very well as coalescing agent in aqueous polyurethane dispersions. Both solvents have similar chemical and physical properties.

Furthermore, the strong solvency of Dipropylene glycol DME allows for formulating powerful paint strippers, graffitty removers, hard surface cleaners and industrial cleaners for degreasing.

Dipropylene glycol DME is also used in two-pack PU clearcoat formulations and as an NMP replacement in agricultural formulations.
